10-Day China Itinerary: Beijing & Shanghai for First-Timers

A ten-day first trip can work with two bases: Beijing for imperial heritage and the Great Wall, then Shanghai for neighbourhoods and city life. This is a planning example, not a published ten-day package; count arrival, transfer and departure separately.

Why choose two cities for ten days?

This route gives Beijing and Shanghai time for more than headline sights. A third city may be worthwhile for a particular interest, but it adds a hotel change and another transfer. With ten calendar days, first mark the international arrival and departure before deciding whether there is a genuine extra day.

Keep Suzhou optional. The published Shanghai–Suzhou five-day route shows what changes when you add a second base near Shanghai; it is an alternative to the Shanghai city route, not an extra free day added to it.

A ten-day outline that counts travel days

Use the outline as blocks to rearrange after flights and reservations are known. The listed attractions and city days are choices, not inclusions in a booked tour. If your arrival is late, keep that evening open and shift the first sightseeing block rather than compressing the Great Wall into the arrival day.

  1. Day 1: arrive in Beijing, reach the hotel and keep the evening light.
  2. Day 2: choose a central imperial area after checking required reservations.
  3. Day 3: give the Great Wall its own day; do not stack a distant visit onto an airport day.
  4. Day 4: allow for another Beijing neighbourhood or garden at your own pace.
  5. Day 5: choose remaining Beijing priorities and prepare for the next day's transfer.
  6. Day 6: move to Shanghai; include checkout, station or airport travel, luggage and check-in.
  7. Day 7: explore one Shanghai neighbourhood and nearby sights instead of crossing the whole city repeatedly.
  8. Day 8: choose a second district or a slower cultural day in Shanghai.
  9. Day 9: keep Shanghai open, or assess a Suzhou visit after checking your transport and preferred base.
  10. Day 10: leave a departure buffer and travel to the correct airport or station.

When does Suzhou fit?

Compare a day visit with a second overnight base. A day visit keeps the Shanghai hotel but adds a return journey and limits the time you can give gardens and canals. Staying overnight changes luggage handling and the next departure point; use the published Shanghai–Suzhou route to see whether those trade-offs suit you.

Do not combine every highlight from the Shanghai city product with every highlight from the Shanghai–Suzhou product and call it the same ten-day plan. Choose which Shanghai time you would exchange for Suzhou.

Confirm trains, hotels and reservations

Check the exact railway stations, travel document used for a ticket, luggage needs and hotel locations before selecting a transfer. Timetables, prices and availability can change; the official China Railway site is the source for your actual dates. Keep both arrival and departure airport choices visible when comparing route directions.

For the Palace Museum, check its own reservation channel before fixing that day. Entry requirements depend on each traveller's documents and journey; verify them through official authorities rather than treating another traveller's eligibility as yours.

Questions before asking for a ten-day plan

Is this an existing ten-day PandaRoam product? No. The Beijing, Shanghai city and Shanghai–Suzhou pages are separate published routes; a combined ten-day journey requires its own proposal and quotation.

What if I have only eight days? Compare the existing five-to-nine-day planning guide and drop an optional city block rather than copying the full ten-day outline.

For an enquiry, share dates, arrival and departure cities, group size, mobility or luggage needs, whether Suzhou matters to you, and your preferred service language. Chinese and English consultation is available; on-tour language and inclusions are confirmed in the quote.
