First Trip to China: A Practical Planning Guide

A good first trip starts with a route you can enjoy at a comfortable pace. Work through these decisions before filling every day with attractions: where to arrive, how often to move, what to arrange yourself and where you need support.

1. Set your travel window and priorities

Write a short trip brief: your likely dates, number of travellers, arrival and departure cities, and two or three experiences that matter most. Add practical needs such as step-free access, slower mornings or luggage space. Discuss these before choosing a route; changing the pace later can affect hotel nights and connections.

Keep a distinction between dates you can travel and dates already booked. If flights are undecided, compare route options before committing to an arrival city. A written brief also makes an enquiry more useful: the planner can explain which parts fit and which need adjustment.

2. Choose a route before adding more cities

For a city-focused visit, compare the Beijing five-day journey with the Shanghai city stay. The Beijing route centres on imperial heritage and Badaling; the Shanghai route combines neighbourhoods, the skyline and Zhujiajiao. Choose the experiences you want, rather than assuming every first trip must include both cities.

If you prefer two connected bases, the Shanghai–Suzhou route gives you a concrete example of combining city time with gardens and canals. For a regional journey, Kunming–Dali–Lijiang involves changing overnight bases and different arrival and departure cities. The Yunnan six-day route is a suggested private journey; shared arrangements require confirmation.

Make a small list of essential stops and another of optional stops. If adding a city creates an extra hotel change just to visit one attraction, compare that with a longer stay in a place already on the route.

3. Count nights and transfer days separately

Put your international flights on the calendar first. Then mark each hotel night, each intercity move and the final airport transfer. An overnight flight, a morning arrival and an evening arrival leave very different amounts of usable time. Treat a transfer day as a travel day before adding sightseeing.

Check the order of each connection: hotel checkout, travel to the station or airport, the journey itself, onward transport and check-in. Avoid building a day around an unconfirmed train or leaving a distant excursion immediately before your flight home. Allow space for rest and for changes to reservations.

The current catalogue includes five- and six-day routes and eight- or nine-day Xinjiang circuits. A seven-, ten- or fourteen-day holiday is a planning window, not an existing package with those exact inclusions. Discuss extra nights and any route changes separately.

4. Decide which arrangements you want help with

Independent travel suits people who want to manage reservations and daily choices themselves. A private trip is useful when your party wants to agree on pace, transfers and service scope together. A shared group requires more flexibility around the confirmed departure, other travellers and the planned order.

Ask who meets you, which transfers are included and whether the person driving also provides guided interpretation. PandaRoam consultations are available in Chinese and English; on-tour service is mainly Mandarin. Request written confirmation if you need another guide language. A shared-group enquiry does not guarantee a departure or a lower price than every private option.

5. Match transport and hotels to the actual route

Copy the exact airport and railway station names from your booking into your day plan. Do not choose a transfer using only the city name. Compare door-to-door travel: the station or airport journey and onward transfer matter as well as the time on the train or plane. Check the live timetable for your date rather than treating an example connection as reserved.

Use China Railway’s official 12306 service to check rail options. Read the current identification and booking instructions for your document, carry the original identification used for the ticket, and allow time for security and ticket checks. Follow the station’s own boarding notices.

For hotels, consider the places you will visit, your arrival time and the next departure. Before paying, confirm the property address, room arrangement, check-in document requirements and cancellation terms. Keep the Chinese address and the property’s contact details offline; ask about luggage storage if checkout and departure do not line up.

6. Prepare payment, mobile data and useful tools

China’s official payment guide covers mobile payments, bank cards and cash. Prepare your preferred method and a backup. If using Alipay or WeChat Pay, check the app’s current card-linking instructions and your bank’s verification requirements before departure; acceptance and fees depend on the service and transaction. Keep some RMB cash available instead of relying on one app.

Compare your operator’s roaming plan with a local SIM or travel data plan. Ask the provider about your phone’s compatibility, activation, coverage, calls and SMS; do not assume a data-only plan will receive verification messages. The government’s visitor-services guide describes local operator service-office options. Confirm the documents and plan with the operator.

Before leaving, test the map, translation and messaging tools you intend to use. Save hotel addresses in Chinese, meeting-point instructions and important booking details offline. Keep a way to contact your travel party if the main app or connection is unavailable.

7. Check documents and reservations for your own trip

Entry arrangements depend on the travel document you hold and the journey you are making. Check current information with the National Immigration Administration and the relevant issuing or consular authority before making non-refundable bookings. This guide does not determine eligibility for visa-free entry or transit.

For each attraction, check the official booking channel, the date you want, the document accepted and whether admission or a reservation is included in your quotation. If a key visit is unavailable, agree on an alternative before building the rest of the day around it. Border-area visits and seasonal roads also need route-specific confirmation.

8. Make one departure checklist

Before confirming: compare the day-by-day route, overnight bases, included transfers, admissions, guide language and cancellation terms. Check which items are confirmed and which are still requests.

Before departure: check your documents, flight and rail bookings, hotel addresses, payment backup, phone connection, meeting points and contact methods. Share the useful parts of the itinerary with your travelling companions. Keep sensitive document copies secure rather than placing them in a general enquiry message.

For a quotation request, send approximate dates, traveller numbers, arrival and departure plans, preferred route and any pace or language requirements. We can then discuss a suitable arrangement and explain the next confirmations.

9. Questions before you choose a journey

How many cities should I visit? Start with the available nights and the experiences that matter most. Compare the value of another city with the packing, check-in and transfer it adds; fewer bases can leave more time to enjoy each place.

Do I need a tour for my whole stay? You can enquire about help with a defined part of the trip. State what you are arranging yourself and ask for a written scope so that transfers, reservations and responsibilities are clear.

Can I turn a sample itinerary into a confirmed booking? A route page is a starting point. Dates, service availability, hotels, transport, language and final price must be confirmed in the quotation. Choose a relevant route below or return to the guide hub to compare planning topics.
