Best Time to Visit Yunnan: Kunming, Dali & Lijiang

For a Kunming–Dali–Lijiang trip, start with the usual November–April drier period versus the May–October wetter period, then plan each outdoor day around actual conditions. Yunnan’s elevation and local weather vary: no single month guarantees the same experience in all three places.

What changes between the usual wet and dry periods?

A Yunnan provincial source describes a generally wetter May–October period and a drier November–April period, while stressing geographic and elevation differences. Treat this as a planning framework, not a day-by-day forecast. The wetter period calls for flexible outdoor blocks and transport checks; the drier period still needs local forecasts and attraction rules.

The table focuses on this site’s existing Kunming–Dali–Lijiang corridor. It does not imply that all of Yunnan shares one climate or that any activity is guaranteed on a particular day.

Plan around three overnight bases

Kunming works as the entry base and a place to decide whether the Stone Forest fits. Dali gives the Erhai area its own time rather than treating it as a stop between trains. Lijiang is the base for the old town and a conditional mountain day. The published six-day route is a private planning reference with five nights, not a fixed departure or guaranteed attraction list.

Choose hotel locations with the next day’s departure point, luggage and walking tolerance in mind. A hotel change uses part of a day even when the intercity journey looks short on a map.

Flexible dates or fixed dates?

If your dates can move, decide whether you value an outdoor-heavy route or a more flexible city-and-culture trip, then compare the usual seasonal periods and current forecasts. Do not move the whole route solely for a promise of clear mountain views. If dates are fixed, protect the overnight sequence and hold a same-area substitute for the most weather-sensitive day.

For a wetter-period trip, a provincial geological-risk plan identifies a seasonal period for heightened monitoring. That is a reason to check official notices and avoid rigid mountain-day promises, not a claim that travel is impossible for those months.

What fits a six-day Kunming–Dali–Lijiang route?

First mark arrival, departure and two intercity moves. Then choose one priority for each base: a Kunming-area outing, an Erhai-area experience and a Lijiang day. If you add another region, something in these six days must give way; a fourth hotel base is not a free extension.

When weather changes, replace an outdoor block within the same base before switching cities. Review the existing Yunnan itinerary guide for time allocation and the published six-day reference for the actual proposed stop sequence. Neither page promises tickets, hotel names or opening conditions.

Check transport, mountain access and reservations

Before paying for a transfer, confirm the exact station or airport and the hotel-to-station legs. Check current railway services on China Railway 12306 for the date and travel document you will use. For mountain or scenic-area days, use the attraction’s current official notices for reservations, weather-related access and any capacity rules; do not infer these from a generic seasonal article.

Tell the operator which day can move, how much luggage the party carries and whether anyone needs a slower walking pace. Ask for a written alternative when a weather-sensitive outing cannot operate as planned.

Questions before choosing a month

Is November always the best month for all three cities? No. The provincial dry–wet pattern is broad, and each place and activity may behave differently. Choose the route and your priorities before comparing actual dates.

Will a six-day trip include every highlighted attraction? No. The six-day page is a private planning reference. Dates, weather-sensitive days, hotels, tickets and inclusions require an individual proposal.
