Beijing Itinerary: How to Plan 3 or 5 Days

Compare a short Beijing stay with a five-day visit. Plan the Forbidden City, Great Wall, city walks and arrival days without treating every day as a full sightseeing day.

Three days or five days?

Start by counting full days in Beijing, separately from arrival and departure. Three full days can give you an introduction to the imperial city, a Great Wall excursion and time in an old neighborhood. If those three days include international flights, narrow the plan: a late arrival does not leave a usable sightseeing afternoon.

Five calendar days with three full days between flights allow a less compressed introduction. Five full days give you room for the Summer Palace, a museum or a slower neighborhood day. Choose the length around the experiences you most want, then decide what to leave out. A five-day product and five full sightseeing days are different things.

A flexible five-day outline

Day 1 — Arrive, settle into your hotel and take a short walk near your accommodation if energy allows. Keep anything requiring a timed admission off this day.

Day 2 — Make the Forbidden City your main visit, subject to a confirmed reservation. Add a nearby outdoor walk only if time and energy remain; do not make a second major attraction compulsory.

Day 3 — Keep a dedicated Great Wall day. Select the section before arranging transport, and discuss walking surfaces, steps and any mobility needs. Avoid attaching a tightly timed city reservation to the return journey.

Day 4 — Choose the Temple of Heaven and an old-city walk, or spend the day around the Summer Palace. The choice is deliberate: crossing the city to fit both can consume the time you wanted to spend exploring.

Day 5 — Check out and depart, with a small nearby activity only if your actual flight or train permits. This is an independent planning example, not the inclusions or fixed order of the Beijing five-day product.

Choose a base before filling the map

Use public transport for city stops when the station-to-entrance walks suit your group. For a Great Wall day, a car request should name Mutianyu or Badaling, the hotel pickup and the return meeting point. A guide request should describe the historical explanation and inside-attraction accompaniment you want; transport and guiding solve different needs.

Fix the Forbidden City day after checking a confirmed reservation, then place the Great Wall day around it. If the museum booking fails, keep a separately checked Temple of Heaven or neighborhood day as an alternative. Do not attach a timed palace admission to an uncertain return from the wall.

  1. Mark the fixed booking or departure first.
  2. Write the pickup or meeting point in full, then check the journey to it.
  3. Keep the optional visit removable until transport and admission are confirmed.

Book the anchor visit; keep an alternative

Use the Palace Museum’s own visitor information and ticketing links to confirm the current opening calendar, reservation process and accepted identification for your visit. Do this before locking the order of the city days. Other sites may have separate reservations; one confirmation does not cover every attraction in the area.

If a booking is unavailable, swap the day with another activity that is actually available, or replace that visit. Do not assume a guide can bypass admission controls. Save confirmations offline and bring the original travel document required by the booking.

Common planning questions

Can I visit Beijing in three calendar days? Yes, but make the plan fit your arrival and departure times; you may need to choose between a city-focused visit and a Great Wall excursion. Do not simply remove two days from a longer itinerary.

Should I reserve every evening? Leave at least the arrival evening and the evening after the Great Wall flexible. A neighborhood meal can be a better fit than another cross-city transfer.

Can I arrange a private trip in English? PandaRoam offers Chinese and English consultation. Confirm the actual guiding language and service scope in your quotation; they are not guaranteed by the language of this article.
